Dominican Cherry Palm

Here is a population of the endemic Dominican Cherry Palm. Scientific name Pseudophoenix ekmanii, this odd shaped palm only grows on the Barahona Peninsula and Isla Beata in the Dominican Republic. Critically endangered, this poorly known species is perhaps the most beautiful of all the Pseudophoenix. The sap of this palm was extracted and fermented for wine production which was a major cause for decline in population.
