About The Film

Chewing betel nut is an ancient custom practiced in places like India all the way to the South Pacific. Betel nut is the seed of an areca palm which when mixed with a few other ingredients gives you a feeling of euphoria and alertness. I have experienced chewing betel in about 5 different countries all of which have their own culture of chewing. This is of ethnobotanical interest for me because this particular palm has been cultivated for thousands of years and still has a mysterious origin. In the film, I share my experience, research, and images of this fascinating plant culture.
